The Mop Tops was formed in 1985 by the guitarist/singer Tomas Nilsson and the entertainer/singer Charlie Granehed. The group was from the beginning rythm´n blues oriented and played covers among others by The Yardbirds, Canned Heat, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Monkees and The Doors.
In 1987 the original singer left and Tomas Nilsson became the leadsinger. During the years their own sound was developed and with a persistant touring they became famous throughout the whole of Sweden. The Mop Tops filled the houses when they performed before an ecstatic audience which loved their ruffleshirts, Chelseaboots, Vox amplifiers and swaying popbeat.
In the beginning of 1990 they released their first record, "Run Away". It was a four-song extended play which was very well received by the press and the groups growing crowd of admirers. Later that year the group released their second record, "Everybodys´Girl. In 1991 the group disbanded but reunited again in 1993.
Now the group had a backcatalouge of 200 songs. 1995 a demo was sent to Velodrome Records, a small record-company in Gothenburg, which led to the recording of their CD debut "Inside".
"Inside" was released in November 1995 and was received with fantastic rewievs all over the world, the music magazines compared the group with Plimsouls, Tom Petty, Matthew Sweet and The Beatles. The french radiostation "Pop Dreams" in St.Etienne voted "Inside" to the best record of 1996
In autumn 1998 there was a change of bandmembers. Lasse Hindberg and Patrik Götlind quitted and was replaced by the guitarist Ronnie Hasslequist and bassplayer Anders Almqvist. This lineup played together until 2000 when Ronnie and Anders quitted and was replaced by the guitarist Leif Johansson and bassplayer Jimmy Carlsson.

In 2001 the group record one song, "Christine", for the compilation "Full Circle",a tribute to Gene Clarke. Later that year they also record one song, "There will be a time",for a vinyl single which accompany the fanzine Popin' Up. In 2002 they contribute with the self-penned "You crucify me" on the Swedish compilation album "Pop Greetings, Volume 4, Sweden.
In October 2003 they were invited to play at the "International Pop Overthrow" at the Cavern Club, Liverpool, England.
November 9, 2004 the group went to New York to play at the International Pop Overthrow. The group made their american debut at the Arlene's Grocery on November 11. At Arlene the group met Little Steven who listened their show and talked to the boys afterwards. In november 2005 the group crossed the Atlantic once again for a short tour in New York. This time they played The Baggots Inn, Lakeside Lounge and Parkside Lounge.

In May 2006 the group visited England, Liverpool again, This time for gigs at Cavern Club, Cavern Pub and The Attic in Accrington.
2008 was a busy year for The Mop Tops. In May they played in Liverpool at the International Pop Overthrow festival. They succeeded to play four! gigs in the same day at The Cavern Club and the Cavern Pub.
All the members of Mop Tops became a part of the new countryrock group The Flying Cow, who made their debut on the swedish scene with the single "If she'll look my way".
June 13 they released their second full-lenght album,"Ground Floor Man". The album was  mixed in New York by Eric "Roscoe " Ambel and
Greg Duffin.
In October they crossed the Atlantic once again to play in New York. This time for gigs at
Arlene's Grocery, Lakeside Lounge, Parkside Lounge and Kennys Castaways,
